Kenny Chesney Talks New Album, Falling Off Stage, and Playing Hurt on The Bobby Bones Show

Kenny Chesney stopped by The Bobby Bones Show to celebrate the release of his new album, Silver Sands Marina, and the conversation went everywhere — from stadium rehearsals to a bloody boot cut off his own foot.

A Three-Year Album, Built One Obsession at a Time

Chesney told Bobby that Silver Sands Marina took three years to make, partly because his schedule was packed with two summers at Sphere and writing a book, but mostly because of how he works. "I have my fingers and my brain on everything," he said, admitting he's never been able to just sing a song and let someone else shape it. That hands-on obsession, he said, comes from genuinely caring about the outcome.

The Night He Fell Off the Stage

Chesney shared a story from an early Foxborough show where his foot caught on the stage's "catwalk," sending him crashing down microphone-first. He said he laid there for about 20 seconds wondering if it had really happened — and the longer he stayed down, the louder the crowd got. These days, a thin carpet covers the stage to prevent it from happening again.

Playing Hurt — Literally

One of the wildest moments in the interview: Chesney recalled breaking his foot on a rising stage lift during his first show at a South Carolina football stadium, then performing an entire concert with his foot trapped between two steel plates before finishing the set and heading straight to the hospital. He also revealed he played through the flu at a 2024 Philadelphia stadium show, telling the crowd he was "insanely sick" and asking them to help him get through it.

Behind the Songs: "What We Got Goin' On," "Burn My Boat," and "Goldfish"

Chesney dug into a few of the album's key tracks:

  • "What We Got Goin' On" with Colbie Caillat traces back to 2007, when he ran up and down PCH listening to her debut album, long before they became friends.
  • "Burn My Boat", written by Casey Beathard and his son Tucker, is what Bobby called "emo Kenny" — a reflective song about finding contentment, not just another beach anthem.
  • "Goldfish", written by Tenille Townes, became a favorite because of its clever animal-metaphor lyrics about heartbreak — a song Chesney called "one of the happiest breakup songs" he's ever heard, complete with a Nudie-suit music video shoot in Maui.

The Bit That Never Gets Old

Bobby and Kenny kept up their running joke of Kenny inviting Bobby to come hang out on his boat or fly out to a Sphere show — and Bobby, true to form, admitting he always finds a way to say no.
