Sequels often don't live up to the original, especially when it takes over three decades to deliver. That's how long it's been since Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall teamed up on the big screen for "Coming To America" back in 1988. When I heard they were finally making a sequel, I really tried to temper my enthusiasm.
For one, director John Landis wasn't going to be involved in this sequel. Second, Eddie Murphy's career cooled off over the last decade. Not to mention, he is now older than James Earl Jones was back in the original movie. Let that sink in a bit.
So it came as a surprise to me that I absolutely LOVED it!!
The movie has so much nostalgia and homage to the first film. In fact, just about every face from the original movie is back for the sequel. There are also a ton of other cameos added in this one. Including Wesley Snipes (when was the last time you heard that name), Tracy Morgan and even Morgan Freeman. There are also some musical surprises from En Vogue, Salt-N-Pepa and Gladys Knight.
I particularly enjoyed Leslie Jones' role as the mother of Prince Akeem's son. She adds even more comedy to the story.
The story is fresh, funny and even includes a message of equality, which is very timely.
If you loved the original, 'Coming 2 America' will not disappoint! I'll give it an 8 out of 10.
"Coming 2 America" is only available on Amazon Prime. Kudos to them for not adding a premium fee to watch the movie.
