CCSD Educator Named National Teacher Of The Year

A Booker Elementary School special education teacher named Juliana Urtubey is now the first Nevadan to be named National Teacher of the Year. CBS This Morning made the announcement, while the first lady (and fellow educator) Jill Biden paid her a surprise visit.

Urtubey, while wiping away tears of joy, praised her fellow teachers and said “As a special education teacher, my job is to find strengths within students, and I fully believe all of our children have strengths.”

She is also the first Latino Teacher of the Year since to win this honor since 2005. You'll see Urtubey honored all around Las Vegas resort properties on their marquee signs.

Since 2013, she has taught at the Clark County School District. This honor means Urtubey will receive a paid year off from classroom duties and travel the country on speaking tours.
